Harper College will be closed on Wednesday, February 12 in observance of Lincoln's Day.
When Sonia Ajakaiye moved from Nigeria to the U.S. in high school, life was filled with many uncertainties. But being the determined and diligent person that she is, one thing remained certain: Nothing was going to stop her from achieving her dream of becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner. As a first-generation college student and HOPE scholarship recipient, Sonia has fully embraced her time at Harper College. In addition to her studies, she works at Endeavor Northwest Community Healthcare and as a student aide at the Harper Educational Foundation. And when she graduates, she plans to transfer to a four-year institution to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, and eventually a Master of Science degree. But when she’s not out breaking personal and professional barriers, you can find her kicking back with a bowl of ice cream and a good movie. Here are ten questions with Sonia Ajakaiye.
My perfect day would be one without violence, war or death. But because I know that is all a part of life, I will settle for ice cream, cake and a good movie.
It would have to be the Fairy Godmother from Cinderella. If not her, then her wand at least. That woman can get things done in a "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.” Imaging being able to get everything on your to-do list done in just the wave of a wand!
I am not much of a singer, but if I was to sing a song it would be “I’ve Witnessed It” by Melodie Malone and Passion. It is a song that reflects how God has come through for me, and in my times of struggle he always sends help. This song serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in my life.
I laugh all the time because laughter is the best medicine. I don’t know who said it, I just know that I agree with the statement. Babies laughing at the sound of paper being ripped makes me laugh hysterically for no reason. Their precious little laughs are highly contagious.
The fact that I’ve relocated to another country, have worked hard and overcome many obstacles, and am now so close to achieving my dream of becoming a nurse.
I get advice from people all the time and I’m grateful for it all. One piece of advice I received is to apply wisdom in every situation, especially disputes. As much as I want to be petty sometimes, I have found that being the bigger person gives me peace of mind.
My dream vacation is anywhere with clean air and water that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
I wonder about skyscrapers! How they’re made, how long it takes to make them and the amount of manpower needed for them to be completed.
Working in health care gives you a new appreciation of life, so I’ll just say I’m feeling deeply grateful to be alive.
I love the fact that Harper College has something for everyone. Harper does not only cater to academic needs, but it also caters to the financial, social and mental health needs of its students. I love the diversity I see on campus; it is refreshing to learn about cultures and traditions that are different from my own.
