Harper's Job Placement Resource Center (JPRC), provides free job placement assistance to enrolled students and alumni. Career opportunities available to graduates of the Sign Language Interpreting Program may include positions as an educational interpreter, freelance interpreter, independent contract interpreter, staff interpreter, or video relay interpreter.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 46 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth will be driven by increasing globalization and by large increases in the number of non-English-speaking people in the United States. Job prospects should be best for those who have professional certification.
There are legal restrictions that apply to interpreters in the state of Illinois. Individuals working toward becoming or already working as interpreters should familiarize themselves with the Interpreter for the Deaf Licensure Act of 2007.
