Employment Classification Definitions

Full-Time Employee

Works 37.5/40 hours per week for 52 weeks per fiscal year OR is employed as a full-time faculty member. Only "Regular" employees can be considered full-time.

Part-Time Employee

There are several classification levels for part-time employees.

  1. Part-time 30 hours or more: Consistently works 30-37 hours per week for at least 36 weeks per fiscal year. Individual employees in this classification are eligible for insurance benefits, professional development dollars, sick, vacation, personal business and holiday accruals, tuition waivers for self and dependents (per tuition waiver guidelines), and are SURS eligible.

  2. Part-time 19-29 hours: Consistently works 19-29 hours per week for at least 36 weeks per fiscal year. Individual employees in this classification may work additional hours during brief peak periods, but must resume their regular schedule (19-29 hours) once the peak period has ended. Individual employees in this classification are eligible for prorated professional development dollars, sick, vacation and holiday accruals, tuition waivers for self only (per tuition waiver guidelines), and are SURS eligible.

  3. Part-time 1-18 hours: Consistently works 1-18 hours per week for at least 36 weeks per fiscal year. Individual employees in this classification may work additional hours during brief peak periods, but must resume their regular schedule (1-18 hours) once the peak period has ended. Individuals in this classification are SURS eligible.

  4. Contingent Worker: Employed on a seasonal or as needed basis only. The total number of hours worked per fiscal year by individual employees in this classification shall not exceed 1040. Employees in this classification are not eligible for SURS, but participate in the Federal Social Security System.

  5. Adjunct Faculty: Instructional faculty who work as needed semester by semester. Adjunct Faculty members are eligible for professional development dollars, leave benefits, tuition waivers for self only (per tuition waiver guidelines), and are SURS eligible.

Temporary/Short Term Employee

Hired to work for a specific project or a specific period of time that shall not exceed 90 days. If the project has not been completed at the end of the 90 day appointment, a one-time extension up to 90 days may be approved. Employees in this classification are not eligible for SURS, but participate in the Federal Social Security System.
