File Names

When naming files, please follow these conventions. These conventions help improve our ability to identify and manage files, as well as contribute to the page's search presence.

Pages

  • Don't use spaces, underscores, capital letters or special characters, including periods, question marks, etc.
  • Use 1–3 whole words joined by hyphens. The words you choose for a filename, along with the rest of the URL, should help someone understand what the page is about at a glance.

Images

  • Don't use spaces, underscores, capital letters or special characters, including periods, question marks, etc.
  • Use 1–3 whole words joined by hyphens. Choose words that will help an administrator or other user understand the content of the image.
  • If the photo pertains to an Harper event and you know the year, include the year in the file name.
  • If there are a more than one similar images, you can number them by hyphenating the number within the file name.
  • Append the image dimensions to the end of the file name after the descriptive words you choose. Separate the dimensions with a hyphen.
