Harper College

Weather-Related Campus Closure

Safety is our number one priority. We make every attempt to keep the college open and operating during inclement weather. In some cases, it may be necessary to close campus entirely because of dangerous weather conditions.

If campus closes due to inclement weather:

  • Online classes continue as scheduled.
  • Students in on-campus classes should not come to campus. Students should check Blackboard and their Harper email for alternative assignments and/or online learning options. Class adjustments will come directly from their faculty.
  • Students in clinicals should check with their program coordinators.
  • Events and activities are canceled.
  • Campus services (e.g., One Stop, Academic Advising, Business Office, etc.) are open, with service provided virtually.
  • Employees work remotely (Harper facilities, police department and other designated essential personnel report to campus as necessary).

Weather-related campus closures will be announced through the Harper Alert emergency notification system, Harper's website and social media channels.

Note: The Health and Recreation Center and NCH Outpatient Care Center (Building M) may remain open when the rest of campus is closed. Please visit Campus Recreation and NCH for more information.

Campus closure information typically will be available by:

  • 5 a.m. for morning classes
  • 10 a.m. for afternoon classes
  • 3 p.m. for evening classes

Frequently asked questions:

Several factors will be considered including road conditions, scheduled classes/activities and the ability to clear campus parking lots and sidewalks.

We aim to make a decision by 5 a.m. for morning classes, 10 a.m. for afternoon classes and 3 p.m. for evening classes.

If you don’t hear from us, campus is open. If campus does close, notification will be sent via text, email and/or phone call through our emergency Harper Alert system (students and employees are automatically included). If you would like to add or change a cell phone number or personal email, go to Harper Alerts (students and employees logging in for the first time will need to register using their Harper email and create a password).

You can also check the college’s website, Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) pages, and the Emergency Closing Center. Harper’s general phone number will play a pre-recorded message: 847.925.6000.

Note: Facilities, police and other designated essential employees should report to campus as necessary. All other faculty and staff should work remotely when Harper’s campuses are closed.

If you did not receive a Harper Alert, view your profile settings in the Harper Alert system. (Students and employees logging in for the first time will need to register using their Harper email and create a password.) If your contact information is missing or incorrect, please add the correct phone number and/or email address.
