Middle America:
Cultural Diversity

The cultures of Middle America have been influenced by its Amerindian, European, African, North American, and even south Asian peoples. Both acculturation and transculturation have occurred. This complex cultural mosaic does have a spatial component. Learning these spatial patterns may help us understand the WHY THERE of many geographic and cultural features.

The general ethnic pattern can be seen here: mmethnic. People with African ancestry including Mulattos (a person of mixed African and European ancestry) dominate the Caribbean island and the Caribbean coast of Central America. Mestizo (a person of mixed white and Amerindian ancestry) dominate Mexico and northern Central America and people of European ancestry are the majority in the southern part of Central America.

Mestizos dominate:

People with European ancestry are the majority in Costa Rica [mmpeocos] and Cuba [mmpeocub] .

Black and Mulatto are dominate in the Caribbean: Haiti [mmpeohai], The Dominican Republic [mmpeodom] Antigua & Barbuda [mma&bpeo] and the Caribbean coast of Central America: Belize [mmpeobel], Panama [mmpanpeo].

Amerindians form the majority of the population of Guatemala [mmpeogua] and southern Mexico [mmpeomex] [mmlangin].
