Computer programmers write programs
and other instructions which enable computers to perform desired
tasks. They decide what information will be needed to solve a
problem. They then prepare a flowchart or description to outline
the machine operations in general terms. Then using the flowchart,
they write complete, step-by-step instructions for the computer.
The program is then tested, errors are corrected, and the procedures
are recorded. A detailed description of the job of computer programmer
can be found in theOccupational
Outlook Handbook.
Because employers needs vary
so do the training paths for computer programmers. Education level
and quality of training is rising due to the growth in the number
of qualified applicants that employers are seeing. A bachelor’s
degree is preferred but positions are available with certificates
and associate’s degrees. Even with a degree, employers appear
to be placing more emphasis on previous experience for all type
of programmers.
